I’m one of those “Would you like some coffee with your creamer?” type people. Coffee in and of itself is boring and bitter to me. But I do enjoy its benefits upon occasion. So, to enjoy it, I must make it palatable. Enter: creamer. And lots of it!
However, store-bought creamer, even though it is so very yummy, is also so very unhealthy. It’s chock full of yucky things like sugar and preservatives.
Since I’ve been doing Trim Healthy Mama, I decided some on plan coffee creamer was in order. So I started making my own! And really, it could NOT be any easier. It contains so few ingredients, it’s so fast to whip up, and it tastes so very good!
Coffee Creamer Base
What You Need
- 3 cups unsweetened almond milk OR cashew milk OR skim Fairlife milk OR hemp milk (dairy free option)
- 1 cup heavy cream, coconut cream, or cashew cream
- 1/4 teaspoon (8 doonks) pure stevia powder (I recommend the THM brand), more or less to taste (or POWDERED equivalent sweetener of choice–How to Powder Sweetener)
- flavoring(s) or extract(s) of choice, more or less to taste, optional (see below for ideas)
What You Do
- Mix together all of the ingredients.
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge. Expires whenever the cream or milk therein does.
THM Fuel
Each tablespoon of this creamer (when made with unsweetened almond milk and heavy cream) contains about 1.25 grams of fat and negligible carbs (flavoring options listed below are neutral). Therefore, on THM, you can enjoy up to 4 tablespoons (1/4 cup) in an E or FP setting and more in an S setting!
Most other ingredient combos are about the same, but always be sure to check your specific ingredients and do the math to figure out specifically how much you can have of your own creamer concoction. All flavorings are typically FP.

Coffee Creamer Flavors
Add one of the following flavor combos (more or less to taste) to one full recipe of the coffee creamer base shared above and in the printable recipe card below. Most of these are inspired by popular Coffee Mate or International Delight creamer flavors (with their permission)! Feel free to freestyle and create your own unique flavor, too (and share about it in the comments below so others can enjoy it as well!).
WARNING #1: Use alcohol or glycerin based liquid flavorings or extracts NOT oil based. Oil based flavorings or extracts do NOT mix with the creamer or the coffee and will not taste very good in it (I have learned this the hard way–let my suffering save you from yours).
WARNING #2: For creamers with cocoa powder or ground spices (cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice), you will need to either mix the ingredients in a blender, with a milk frother, or heat up the milk first then stir in the cocoa powder or ground cinnamon while it’s hot (I prefer to use the other alternatives so there is no heating while making this). This is because neither cocoa powder nor ground cinnamon dissolves well in cold or room temperature liquid.
WARNING #3: Keep an eye out for added sugar in some extracts or flavorings. There are flavorings and extracts without sugar in them, so I would aim for those over the ones with unnecessary sugar (regardless of how miniscule the added sugar might be).
Almond Coconut
- 1 tablespoon almond extract
- 2 teaspoons coconut flavor
Almond Happiness (like Almond Joy)
- 1 tablespoon almond extract
- 2 teaspoons coconut flavor
- 2 teaspoons cocoa powder (see warning #2 above) or 1 teaspoon chocolate extract
Amaretto
- 2 teaspoons almond extract
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon flavor OR 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (see warning #2 above)
Buttery
- 1 tablespoon butter extract
Butter Pecan
- 1 tablespoon pecan flavor
- 2 teaspoons butter flavor
Cake Batter
- 1 tablespoon cake batter flavoring
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Caramel Macchiato
- 1 tablespoon caramel extract
- 1 teaspoon espresso powder
Caramel Chocolate
- 1 tablespoon caramel extract
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (see warning #2 above) or 2 teaspoons chocolate extract
Caramel Delight (like Samoas)
- 1 tablespoon caramel extract
- 2 teaspoons coconut flavor
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon butter extract
Caramel & Peanut Candy Bar (like Snickers)
- 1 tablespoon caramel extract
- 1 tablespoon peanut butter flavor
- 1 tablespoon chocolate extract OR cocoa powder (see warning #2 above)
Chai Vanilla
- 1 tablespoon chai flavoring
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
Cheesecake
- 1 tablespoon cream cheese flavoring (may contain dairy, depends on brand)
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Chocolate
- 1 tablespoon chocolate extract OR cocoa powder
Chocolate Chip Cookie
- 2 tablespoons chocolate extract OR cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon unsulphured blackstrap molasses
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon butter flavor
Chocolate Coconut (like Mounds)
- 2 teaspoons coconut flavor
- 2 teaspoons cocoa powder (see warning #2 above) or 1 teaspoon chocolate extract
Chocolate Hazelnut (like Nutella)
- 1 tablespoon hazelnut extract
- 1 tablespoon chocolate extract OR cocoa powder (see warning #2 above)
Chocolate Orange
- 1 tablespoon chocolate extract OR cocoa powder (see warning #2 above)
- 2 teaspoons orange extract
Chocolate Raspberry
- 1 tablespoon chocolate extract OR cocoa powder (see warning #2 above)

Cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon flavor OR 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (see warning #2 above)

- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

- 1 tablespoon chocolate extract OR cocoa powder (see warning #2 above)
- 1 tablespoon peanut butter flavor
Peppermint
- 2 teaspoons peppermint extract
Peppermint Mocha
- 1 tablespoon chocolate extract OR cocoa powder (see warning #2 above)
- 2 teaspoons peppermint extract
- 1 teaspoon coffee flavor OR 1 teaspoon instant coffee granules OR 1 teaspoon espresso powder
Pumpkin Spice
- 1 tablespoon pumpkin spice extract OR 1-1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice (see warning #2 above)
Raspberry White Chocolate
- 1 tablespoon white chocolate flavoring
- 2 teaspoons raspberry extract
Salted Caramel
- 1 tablespoon caramel extract
- 1/2 teaspoon No Salt (or similar potassium chloride “salt”; this dissolves more readily than regular salt, though you can use regular salt if you heat the milk before adding)
S’mores
- 1 tablespoon marshmallow flavor
- 1 tablespoon chocolate extract OR cocoa powder (see warning #2 above)
Toasty Almond
- 1 tablespoon almond extract
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Vanilla
- 1 to 2 tablespoons pure vanilla extract
Vanilla Caramel
- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon caramel extract
White Chocolate
- 2 tablespoons white chocolate flavoring

Helpful Notes
NOTE #1–Essential Oils: Some readers have been asking about using ingestable essential oils. Yes, you could use them in this creamer (just add one drop at a time to taste). However, you will need to stir or shake the creamer before using it because the oils will float to the top. Please note, however, that I do NOT recommend ingesting essential oils, especially for purposes like this where it is totally unnecessary.
NOTE #2–Collagen & Protein Powder: A couple of you asked about adding collagen or protein powder to the creamer. Yes, that can be done as well! Just figure about how much you use of this creamer per serving then add that many servings of collagen or protein powder. You will also probably want to either run the creamer through a blender or heat the milk before adding the collagen or protein powder to keep it from clumping.
For example, I use the recommended serving size of 2 tablespoons (you can have up to 4 tablespoons which is 1/4 cup in an FP or E setting and more in an S setting) which makes this recipe yield 32 servings. So I would add 32 scoops of either collagen or protein powder (warning: this might thicken it; I haven’t tried it this way, so I’m not sure). But, I personally find it easier to mix the collagen or protein powder into the coffee before adding the creamer (then you don’t have the added step of heating something up before making your creamer).
NOTE #3–Thickener: A few of you asked about adding a thickener to the creamer to make the consistency a bit thicker. Most of you are satisfied with the cream as added thickness as it make it similar to store-bought creamer. However, a few want it a bit thicker.
To achieve this, you can add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of either gluccomannan or xanthan gum then run the mixture through a blender to evenly distribute it. It may foam up some from these thickeners (and keep in mind I have not tried this because I really don’t care for either and I like the thickness of this recipe as-is; if any of you try adding the thickeners though, please let me know how it works out for you).
NOTE #4–Coconut Oil: Because I have coconut oil as an ingredient in my powdered creamer, some of you have been inquiring about adding coconut oil to this liquid creamer. Since the creamer is liquid, I would recommend you NOT add coconut oil to it. This is because it hardens when refrigerated (and if you use fractioned [liquid] coconut oil, read my MCT note below because, same problem). However, yes, you can totally add some to your hot coffee as you’re making a cup!
NOTE #5–MCT Oil: Along the same lines, I’ve been asked about MCT oil. Again, I wouldn’t necessarily add it to the creamer because then you have to really shake it to get it mixed in and it naturally separates so that makes it difficult to get from the creamer container to your coffee mug (even after shaking well). I would recommend just adding the MCT oil directly to your cup of joe. Some people in the THM community have pointed out that you can buy a coffee syrup pump and put it on in place of the MCT oil bottle’s lid to quickly pump some MCT oil into your coffee!
NOTE #6–Fairlife Milk: I list skim Fairlife milk as one of the milk options. This makes it ever so closer to half and half. You can use 2% or whole Fairlife milk if you’d like, just be aware of the higher fat content to evade a THM XO in an E or FP setting. I would, however, use one of the other milk options if possible unless this is just what makes it or breaks it for you.
Homemade Flavored Coffee Creamer
Ingredients
- 3 cups plain unsweetened almond, cashew, hemp, OR skim Fairlife milk
- 1 cup heavy cream, coconut cream, or cashew cream

So glad to have found this! I used about half of the full cream and added a small container of Premier Vanilla Protein beverage.to boost the protein. I find it hard to eat first thing in the morning and this is enough to hold me over until 3 hours later, and count it as a FP snack. I am still hoping this keeps it in the FP range as long as I keep my usage under 1/4 cup?

Hi, Kim. I’m not fully familiar with Premier Vanilla Protein and I’m not sure which is the small one, so I’m not sure if this would still fit as a FP. FP items are 5 grams fat or less and 10 carbs or less, so if it fits numberwise it might work. I’m curious how many grams of sugar would be in a serving with this?

Hi, Tiffany. There are 0 added sugars unless something you add has sugar in it (like molasses, and that varies based on what molasses you use). The cream has 0 grams sugar and the almond milk has 0 grams sugar. The sweeteners recommended have 0 grams sugar. So the creamer unflavored by itself is 0 grams sugar. With added ingredients, based on what ingredients are added, typically it will have 0 grams or less than 1 gram sugar (again varies on what is added and the specific brand used, most flavorings/extracts don’t have any sugar).
When my recipe card auto-calculates nutrition facts, it’ll not list any items (like sugar) that are 0 or <1 gram.

I don’t have one specifically for that yet, but I’ll add it to the list of ideas when I update. 🙂 What you can probably do is just add some mineral salt to the Caramel Macchiato (like around 1/2 teaspoon) and you might need to run it through the blender so the salt mixes in instead of sinking to bottom (but it may sink to bottom anyway, I’m not sure). Or shake it a bit before use. Or add a pinch of salt to the freshly brewed hot coffee (the heat should theoretically dissolve it) then add the Caramel Macchiato homemade creamer. Hope that helps. Since starting to really concentrate on eating healthy, more fresh fruits and vegetables, less meat, and giving up sugar for the most part have missed the sweetness of my morning coffee. Is there a Stevia product with no additives? I have used the Stevia my husband buys and likes but continual usage upsets my intestinal tract. Trim Healthy Mama’s Stevia (you can purchase it HERE) does not have preservatives and it’s the one I’d recommend most. If you still have troubles with it, you might have a sensitivity to it and could try other sweeteners such as monk fruit (but for this recipe, you’d need more monk fruit to sweeten it enough).

Yes, you scrape them out from the pod then just throw them in there. 🙂 There are lots of YouTube videos on how to get the beans out. You basically cut a slit in the pod then use the back of your knife to scrape out the beans.

Hi, Nicole. Yes, the THM brand stevia is pretty concentrated so very sweet. You can add more or less to taste. 8 doonks is the same as 1/4 teaspoon. A single “doonk” is 1/32 teaspoon and is a measurement term that the Trim Healthy Mama founders coined. 🙂

I do, however have a request: a coffeeshop where we used to live had a Christmas drink made with eggnog – and my dear husband loves it. I FINALLY got myself off of flavored creamer, but I do miss it sometimes! So glad I came across this! Question: Do I add the flavorings directly in my cup or in a bottle of creamer? That may seem silly to ask, but I’m not sure! Thank you for the neat printable as well! I have it in my binder that I printed from your site some time ago! You are AWESOME!

I found this an thought wow! But I tried the hazelnut… My favorite, I have used coffee mate for 17yrs. Now I find myself not able to have some of the ingredients. Although this is excellent in calories an fat it just doesn’t have the hazelnut flavor. I didn’t change anything but I was thinking about ordering some hazelnut powder and dissolving it in another batch when I can get it in. Hoping it will be closer to the flavor. I know the richness/creamy won’t be there..

Hi, Marie. So Hazelnut is my fave too and I make it all the time. I tried a brand OTHER than Watkins and it didn’t taste right. So I’m wondering if maybe it needs to be the Watkins brand? I’m not sure. Hopefully that’s helpful. Did you end up trying the powder? How’d it turn out?

I haven’t bought the hazelnut powder but I started using hazelnut flavoring syrup an it works good.

It does eventually. It’ll last as long as your almond milk or creamer which is typically like a month or so. You can halve the recipe if you don’t think you’ll use the whole one soon enough. 🙂

Hi, Heidi! Coconut really isn’t very high in sugar unless it’s added. It is high in fat though. The coconut cream is the fat from the milk that has been separated. 🙂

I’m not sure. There’s probably around 1/2 cup or so cream (give or take) in a can I’d say, so probably around 6 cans total. They do sell cans with just cream in them as well.

Oh, and what kind and brand of molasses? A friend is here visiting and watched me respond and said that she finds any kind of molasses bitter. If that’s the case (like you’re one of the people who finds molasses bitter), you should be able to return the bottle of molasses.

I have only bought Gentle Sweet and Super Sweet from THM. Do you know how much that would be instead of the Pure Stevia?

Hi, Lisa. You’d need 3 tablespoons Super Sweet Blend or 6 tablespoons Gentle Sweet. I figured this using the sweetener conversion chart found on the THM website. 🙂 Hope this helps. Have a blessed day, Lisa!

OH, and you’ll probably need to powder the sweetener in a clean coffee grinder so it dissolves in the liquid. 😀
