When you’re enjoying a healthful eating lifestyle like Trim Healthy Mama or keto, there may be an occasion where you want to make something that requires a powdered sugar alternative. You can buy something like powdered Swerve, but sometimes it’s easier or more budget friendly to simply make your own powdered sweetener.

Uses for Powdered Sweetener

  • Dusting desserts or plates for desserts to make it look pretty or fancy or like it has a snow effect (think Christmas).
  • Making icing (might I recommend my Sugar Free No Cook Swiss Meringue Buttercream icing recipe).
  • Creating recipes where you don’t want grittiness (think Skinny Chocolate).
  • Adding to beverages or other liquids (powdered sweetener more readily dissolves).
  • Making other desserts or sweet things that just need a powdered sweetener.
  • Shaking it onto people’s heads when they’re not looking so it looks like they have major dandruff issues.
  • Whatever else you want. It’s your powdered sweetener.

What You Need

What You Do

  1. Measure out about HALF the amount of granulated sweetener as you’ll need powdered (it fluffs up and expands a bit).
  2. Pour into a powderful, quality food processor, blender, or coffee grinder (some machines may not work as well as others).
  3. Pulse until a poofy, powdered, legal substance results.
  4. Wait for the poofy-ness to settle before removing the lid.
  5. Re-measure to ensure there’s enough then use as you must.

  1. I’ve seen some “recipes” that call for corn starch to be added. I’m a bit leary of that. Should I be adding some?

    1. That’s typically used as a thickener. My recipe doesn’t have any, it doesn’t need it. 🙂

  2. My powdered xylitol went grainy when I added my lemon juice for a glaze. Maybe I didn’t process long enough when powdering it?

    1. Hey, Jeanette. Yes, that sounds like it wasn’t processed enough. It should become a poofy powder when done.

  3. Lisa Spears says:

Thanks for the tips! Will this sugar keep well or does it need to be used right away?

    1. It keeps well. Lasts as long as the sweetener does.

  4. Has anyone tried making a mix of Powdered Monk
Fruit with Erythritol? I have pure monk fine powder but am not sure what proportions might match the purchased mixes

  5. Karen Cherubino says:

Seems simple enough that even I can do it! Thanks for the recipe~

Thank you so much for posting this! I have been looking for a powdered sweetener at all of my local stores with no success! This will be perfect!
