Join us as we embark on a reading trek with Kevin Lovegreen’s award winning hunting and fishing children’s book series dubbed Lucky Luke’s Hunting Adventures.
There are a couple things that my kids absolutely love: reading and anything to do with the outdoors. On the reading front, I have a college degree in Professional Writing so reading and writing are natural loves of mine. My husband is an avid book reader and can consume large volumes quickly. On the outdoors front, I myself am a competition winning marksman (from my days in 4-H and beyond) and both my husband and I are big hunters and fishermen (and campers). So naturally our kids have picked up on our passions and integrated them as their own.
So when I discovered that there is actually a children’s book series that focuses on the hunting and fishing adventures of a little boy, I knew my kids would adore them. Which is why I hopped on the opportunity to review them.
About the Author
Meet Kevin Lovegreen, the author behind these hunting and fishing themed children’s books.
Kevin hails from Minnesota where he lives with his wife and two kids.
His book writing adventure began when he sold his shares to the family business to his brother. Not knowing what to do next in life, he began interviewing life coaches.
In talking to one life coach, Kevin shared how he had journaled about his hunting and fishing excursions since he was 12 years old. So the life coach suggested he do something with those journals.
Still not knowing what he was gonna do, Kevin ran into a friend one day who suggested he meet with her mother who was a children’s author. Kevin did and had a blast, finally deciding what he was going to do–write children’s books based on the hunting and fishing adventures he had journaled about and about the ones his family had experienced.
Thus was born Lucky Luke’s Hunting Adventures. Featured in this series as the heroes of the stories are his very own kids–Lucky Luke and Crystal.

TJ’s Take
Our family was sent a set of the 9 chapter books to read for this review (plus some neat bonus bookmarks).
The first thing I noticed about these books of course was the cover artwork. Each of the 9 volumes has a beautiful illustration that corresponds to its story line.
Every book also dons the golden Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards emblem so I knew at a glance that there was something special about them.
Inside each chapter book are further illustrations which appear to be a combination of black and white photos and hand drawn images, bringing the narration to life while also giving the kids something visual to nudge their imaginations.
The books are well-written and full of excitement, pulling the young reader to turn page after page as they read the story.
The chapters are each fairly short and broken into not-too-long paragraphs, making it perfect for younger grade levels to read and enjoy.
In addition to narrating the exhilarating thrills that come with hunting and fishing, the books also contain a good amount of educational content. For example, in the book Fish On, the reader learns about different types of lures and in The Snake River Challenge, they discover the basics of casting a fly fishing rod.
Overall, I am extremely pleased with these books. They provide wholesome, fun entertainment for my kids to enjoy; they present a new educational medium in a hobby our whole family loves; and they boost their literacy. For these reasons, I highly recommend them to others.
